MY BIO …

I was born in Long Beach and raised in Westminster until I was 13.  Then we moved to Northern California where I had three horses and worked at a ranch.  I spent my high school years training horses. I also enjoyed mountain biking, waterskiing, and anything outdoors.  My favorite subjects in high school were accounting and woodshop.

Then, when I was 18, and with $250 in my pocket, I got in my car and hit the road back down to Orange County. I moved to Garden Grove where I met my wonderful husband and had three amazing children.

I was a homeschool mom and one of my favorite things to do with my kids was to travel all over the world doing missionary work. We delivered shoes boxes filled with toys and necessities to children in the Ukraine for Operation Christmas Child.  We went to Africa twice visiting villages, working in orphanages, as well as helping HIV positive women.  We traveled to Brazil with our Youth Group visiting churches and orphanages.  And we spent a year taking teams to Mexico every month to set up bathing facilities where children could take a shower and receive one new outfit of clothing.

Once the kids went off to college, I refocused my energy on business.  My business partner, Tina, and I opened Short Sale Solutions in 2008, following our passion for real estate and to fill a need for short sale negotiations.  We also purchased and manage several investment properties.  By 2013 we had opened Beneficial Real Estate, which is now NextHome Coastal.

All of my children are now grown and married.   I have two precious and brilliant little grandbabies and hopefully more on the way.  I call Mission Viejo home and work in Lake Forest to stay close enough to the beach.  We escape to the beach anytime we can and try to make it to our yearly San Clemente camping trip.  When not working, I love yoga, and spending time with my family.  I love any kind of coffee but my favorite is Peets.

MY BIO ...

My interest in real estate started back when I was a young girl and my mother would take me to tour model homes. How I loved the architecture and decorating and all the possibilities! So it was a natural thing to buy homes and start a career as a real estate investor.

From this investor side sprung a Short Sale processing company. As investors, we like thinking “outside of the box” and coming up with creative solutions, so we were willing to tackle the most difficult transactions, i.e. Short Sales. It didn’t take long to discover that we had a “knack” for processing and getting our way with the banks. So with our tenacity (plus our compassion), we found our niche by helping homeowners and assisting their agents to get their short sales approved.

I am a native California girl – growing up in Anaheim – and after college on the east coast, have been firmly planted for the past 30 years in South Orange County (which I love!). I currently live in the Lake Forest Keys neighborhood, which is by far my favorite place (& a great place to unwind after work … floating on a boat with a glass of wine!)

My strengths are more administrative in nature, (I call myself the “wife of the company” … which means I do it all!) Systems and order make me happy. I love technology but it is also my curse as technology comes naturally, so I am always called on to fix things. I also love helping people discover their passion. I can be a bit anal, overly detail-oriented and sometimes my list runs my life!

I am happily married with 5 kids (his, hers, ours & theirs) plus I also have a very spoiled Coton de Tulear named Cooper. When I am not working (although I will admit building my business IS my hobby!), I enjoy movies, theater, “culinary adventures” and traveling. I am also a lifelong learner and admitted book & computer nerd.

I AM …

Even tempered, detail oriented and compassionate.

MY PROUDEST MOMENT …

Raising (and homeschooling!) my four children.

MY BIGGEST CHALLENGE …

Choosing a restaurant.

MY ALARM CLOCK …

5:15 a.m.

MY PERFECT DAY …

Staying on schedule and getting to cross a lot of things off of my list.

MY FIRST JOB …

Scooping ice cream.

MY SUPER HERO POWER …

The ability to see both sides of a story. And a supernatural sweet tooth.

MY FAVORITE ORANGE COUNTY NEIGHBORHOOD …

My neighborhood … Lake Forest Keys.

MY INSPIRATION …

My foundation is my family and my faith.

My motto is to always be kind and do the right thing.

My mantra is “dream, do and don’t give up”.

WHY I LOVE

NEXTHOME COASTAL …

MY BIO ...

I grew up in a sports heavy family where the weekends were spent either at a baseball tournament or on the gridiron playing Peewee football. I remember being dragged to T-ball sign ups as a kid and DID NOT want to play. But I am so glad my parents forced me to try it because with some hard work, I was able to earn a full scholarship.

Looking back on it, if I had not played that season, who knows if I would be where I am today. A lot of my characteristics today were developed through playing sports my entire life. The hatred of losing and never quit attitude has translated into my real estate career seamlessly. Being able to get my clients offers accepted over my competition is a great feeling and being able to go the extra mile to show my clients in a great light at times makes a huge difference. My tenacity to get the best deal for my client is largely dedicated to my roots of having played sports my entire life.

And of course I still follow sports closely! So if you ever want to go check out the Angels, Chargers, Ducks or Trojans, just let me know!

MY BIO ...

The third oldest of six children and the oldest girl, my parents heeded the call to “Go West Young Man…” , so my father came to California to find work and a place to live. He eventually found a job as a milkman with the Carnation Milk Company … we were truly “the milkman’s kids”.

My mother then followed and undertook the nearly impossible: she transported five children, all under the age of 12, the youngest being two, along with our grandfather who lived with us and was severely crippled with arthritis, via train from Pittsburgh, PA to Los Angeles, CA. (She had to pretend that my grandfather was her husband or they wouldn’t let a woman travel with children alone.) After a week of travel, we made it to California and lived with my aunt, uncle and cousin in a two-bedroom apartment for about a month until my parents found a house in the San Gabriel Valley where we lived for the next 35 years.  Eventually, another of my siblings was born in 1968 … she’s the only California native.

After two years at Mt. San Antonio College, I was so excited to get out into the world and eventually worked at 20th Century Fox as a film booker. I was a temp filling in for a woman on maternity leave. She didn’t come back, so I stayed for the next five years and would eventually become the first female sales rep in their history.

After Fox, I began my career in real estate working for June Scott, the “broker to the stars” in Beverly Hills in 1990. Her rolodex was like a who’s who in the film biz: Grace Jones would casually drop in; the elevator doors would open and George Hamilton would step out; we sold Madonna her first house on Bluejay Way in the Hollywood Hills; we sold Sandy Gallan’s house (which he used to refer to as “the house that Dolly built” as he was the agent to Michael Jackson, Cher, Dolly Parton and many more); and most notoriously, we sold the Kitty and Jose Menendez house on Elm Street in Beverly Hills. I used to go to that house when we would hold it open and would sit with Teresita, the grandmother of Lyle and Erik. She truly believed that they were innocent. She visited them every day at the L.A. County Jail.

I then moved to San Francisco, and continued my career in real estate. I was recruited to a very well-known, family-owned boutique company, where I would stay for the next 12 years. I was the Operations Manager, Facilities Manager, HR Director, Assistant Sales Manager, Executive Assistant to the Owner, plumber, handyman, chief, cook and bottle washer. I did everything that needed immediate attention.

When the recession hit, I was part of the reduction in force and took the next year off helping my sister at her store, Serenity Stoneworks, in Pleasanton, CA - a beautiful little bedroom community in the East Bay. Eventually, I opened my own jewelry and accessory store at her business location. I started under a canopy in the driveway and stayed there for six months, then moved to a very cute shed in the beautiful backyard, and eventually ended up leasing the storefront facing the street when one of her tenants left. The name of my store was, The Bracelet Bar @ Serenity. My slogan was, to no one’s surprise, “When cocktails just aren’t enough”.  We closed our stores at the end of 2013 and I moved back to Southern California to work with my brother at his soil company. It was fun to play in the dirt and drive 10-ton dump trucks, which I did for the next three years.

I am now settled in Orange County. I bought a condo in Dana Point, decided to return to the real estate industry, and found new members of my family at NextHome Coastal!

Over thirty years ago, I originated my first home loan for a wonderful family … and that sparked my passion of helping make homeownership dreams come true!  This prompted me to change careers from the legal industry into mortgage lending so I could live my most genuine life – helping others! I helped put thousands of families into new homes and acquire their American dream.  This career change also required that I get a real estate license in order to work in the mortgage industry.  That was a fortunate side effect, as now that the mortgage industry has gone more in the direction of being ‘transactional’, having my license allows me to stay “relational’ and continue to help families. Being able to be a part of the exciting time of getting them into a home is most gratifying for me. I will probably work until I keel over; I absolutely love working and wake up each morning excited for the day!

Personal Bio...

I was born and raised in Pleasanton, CA (which is also the birthplace of NextHome!).  No stoplights, only stop signs and a grocery store.  I watched the city grow and I grew up with it.  Emancipated and married at 15, I then had the most amazing little girl. I raised her in Pleasanton and San Ramon – determined to give her the childhood that I never had. I went to Cal State Hayward and studied paralegal, and then transferred on to Santa Clara.  I worked at a prestigious law firm for several years before discovering my love for real estate through my father.  Mortgage lending was an easy transition for me and gave me the opportunity to be a very involved mother. I was at every practice, every school event, every … EVERYTHING!  I was so fortunate! I now have two grandsons. I love being a granny! They are my everything AND give me affirmation that I have the strongest, most loving daughter.  Additionally, I have always been an advocate for volunteering – I work with the OC Rescue Mission and the LA Mission – and am a cat lover, raising my new kitty Charlie after losing DJ after 14 years.

MY BIGGEST CHALLENGE ...

MY ALARM CLOCK ...

WHAT OUR CLIENTS HAVE TO SAY

At first, I contacted Bryan to help me find a home for purchase. From the first day I contacted him, I knew he would work his hardest to find me a place that would make me and my kids happy. Bryan listened and took into consideration everything I needed. After a few weeks, I changed gears and looked into places to rent. Bryan would notify me of places available and within a week he found a place for me. He worked with the listing agent to set up a time for us to meet and I was signing lease papers 2 days later! I'm extremely thankful I had his help and will definitely use him in my future real estate needs.

-Noel Cantrell, Staff Analyst

I have done business with several brokers in the past and I have never been as happy as when I had the pleasure of meeting Marlene Waterhouse.

I was in a difficult and stressful situation. I was involved in a 1031 exchange where I had sold an apartment building in West L.A. and had 45 days to find a replacement property. The previous realtor I worked with had given me the address of 7 properties, told me to go and take a look from the outside and asked me to call him back if I found anything I liked and wanted him to write an offer!

Nothing met my qualifications and I was getting pretty desperate.

By chance, I saw Marlene's company advertised on the Internet. I explained my situation to her. She immediately explained to the clients she was working with that she had a situation that required immediate attention. She didn't waste any time, and after finding out what my requirement were, she started looking for a lot of properties within my price range.

Marlene had a lot of patience with me and constantly reassured me that we would find just what I wanted. She personally took me around, showed me several houses and condos and before the deadline, managed to find me 2 beautiful properties and write offers that were accepted.

I consider Marlene highly professional, patient and sweet. On a scale of 1  to 10, she rates 100!

-Irene D. Soumakian, Retired High School Principal

She and her team took care of everything! Over the course of the transaction, she was able to keep in constant contact with me and give me updates. I would highly recommend her for anyone needing to either downsize or sell a home!
